Oliver Darling
The late November air flowed around his body, hardly making a difference to his comfort. Aside from the dead leaves crushing beneath his feet, and the dark moody sky that was typical of this time of year, it could have been the middle of the summer and he wouldn't have truly been able to tell the difference. One of the many things that he had been cursed with, on a cold winter day all those years ago. In fact, as they days continued to creep further and further away from November and closer and closer to the month that followed, they moved closer to that very day, drudging that particular memory to the forefront of his mind, and was a strong motivator in the mood that had currently been pressing upon him.

Although the weather called for many to be in a mood that was similar to the one that the vampire had descended into, the arrival of one Theodore Evander Ashby only a week or two prior had sent those closest to him into a mood of ecstasy that he had quickly found he could not share, but loathed to ruin. There was nothing wrong with the child, that was the first thing that Oliver would like to make clear. He was as thrilled as anyone could be for his friends, and the child that he was perfectly prepared to dote upon whenever allowed. It was not the child that he had a problem with, but rather the world that he now represented, one that Oliver was strongly reminded he was not a part of. Not really, despite what he knew his friends, and Conner would say.

There was a time, very brief, that Oliver had been quite fond of the idea of children, or rather his own children. That had been short lived, however. Killed the moment that he realized he had no desire in the creatures he needed to help create one. Adoption, in the modern sense of the world, was not an idea that happened, and they certainly weren't ever going to give a child to a wifeless servant. A brief period had occurred in which he thought, providing he could convince Henry to see reason, he could at the least live vicariously through the family. That ended however with his own life, followed a number of years later by Henry's as well. Oliver may have gotten up from that incident. His body may have continued to walk, and his mouth continued to speak, but he had never needed air again, nor had his heart ever taken another steady beat. In every sense that mattered to the man he had died, and he had taken that idea very much to heart in the long empty years that had followed. It was something that he had accepted, and for the most part it did not prove to bother him. It was the world he was meant to be in, the world that he deserved. And he had forgotten. Conner had burned so brightly that Oliver had thought for a moment he could escape his world. For a blissful period, he had thought perhaps he could drag himself out of the world of the dead back into the living. Little Theodore, and his prideful parents had reminded him though that he was doing nothing more than playing pretend. Conner could not pull him from the world of the dead, but Oliver could pull him into it.

That, there, was the thought that had been pulling his mood down, dragging him away from the source of comfort and out into the cold November air. He could live in the world of dead, that was his fate, but he could not bring someone with him. It wasn't fair. It wasn't the right thing to do.

But how did you give up the only thing that you wanted? How did you give up what mattered most? Oliver did not know. He supposed he would keep walking, until he found some answer. Or until something else found him.

Karma had missed this place.

She hadn't been away from it that long, really. Only a few years, during which she had worked hard on getting her business under way, helping the creatures financially, helping in the rebuilding and protection of creature-owned workshops. It had lead to a lot of nights bent over papers scattered on the kitchen table, a lot of nights full of conference calls to people who had some sort of influence in both muggle and magical creature worlds.

She liked to think that it wasn't too much of a strain on her marriage. Liksie understood, and if it became too much, he took it away from her. She liked their balance. And sometimes when Feliks was busy with his art, she had a bright eyed, intelligent miniture version of him to come bother her away from her work, if only for a few hours. Adrian insisted she help him with his homework, or sing her a song with him, or paint a bit.

She loved her family. Growing up as she did, without any of them, and now she had a family that loved her. That would prefer her over any other woman.

She was shaken from these thoughts by the man that walked ahead of her, cutting directly across her path to the castle. She blinked a few times, before tilting her head to the side and sniffing.

"Hey!" She called, moving to catch up with him. "Are you aware that your face is in that particular set of emotion? Or- well... expression? You'll concern your loved ones, you know."

Oliver Darling
Oliver was not anticipating another person being out in the cold. Both the poor weather, and the nearness to the meal all that were within (or at least most that were within) were obliged to partake in would keep the others inside, and leave Oliver free to collect his thoughts before he returned. He did not wish to send Conner away without a reason, and yet he could not come up with a reason that the other would listen to, or keep his mood from bringing questions while he was around. It had in part been the goal of this walk to at least come up with something to say when inevitably asked what was wrong, however the longer he walked the more it seemed he was not going to be able to do that.

Whether he was able to come up with a solution to his self created problem or not was put on the sidelines when one of the people he had not anticipated being out, spoke up, rather startling the vampire that should have been rather difficult to startle. This, of course, was nothing new. Oliver was a fan of ignoring his senses in favour of his own thoughts on a number of occasions, and this one was not anything new. The girl's voice however, caused him to turn, slowing to allow her to fall into step with him should she wish as he gave her a curious glance.

She was neither student nor teacher, and neither was she completely human nor completely vampire. The one thing Oliver knew for he had not see her around the school nor heard of a new teacher being hired, and the other for he could smell it upon her. Of course, being the man that he was neither of these things were commented upon.

"Perhaps, that is why I am wearing my particular expression out here, rather than in there where they are far more likely to observe it."

"So you do have loved ones then?" Karma asked, tilting her head to the side ever so slightly. "Last I heard the only non-headmistress vampire on staff was a bit of a hermit, never got close to anyone." She paused slightly, before falling into step with him, wrapping her light sweater tighter around herself. The movement was more habit than any reaction to the cold - the half vampire's sense of temperature, while not as gone as the vampire beside her, was still much less than a human's, no matter how much heat she felt during her and her husband's more intimate moments - but it was a good segue into wrapping her arms around herself.

"Because they'd be concerned." She observed, giving a soft hum. "That's their job, you know. To worry. No matter how many times you show that you can outlast and outlive them all, they're still going to treat you like one of them, because to them, you are." Her shoulders rose and fell in an aborted sort of motion, before she gave a sigh. "Sorry. I don't know you or your situation. I shouldn't come here and act like I'm some expert."

The grass beneath her feet made a soft sound as she scuffed her boot against it. "Oh! Right. Hang on." She turned to face him, a smile coming easily to her face as she extended her hand.

"Karma Black-Chmerkovskiy. CEO of Black Enterprises, funder of libraries, friend...ish... of Amora Kirke, half-vampire abomination extraordinaire, and... uh..." She blinked a few times, before shaking her head, an odd expression on her face that was undeniably fond. "...home maker? I guess?"
